INTRODUCTION

Bharani festival or Oracle festival is an annual temple festival that happens in Kodungallur at Thrissur district in Kerala. During this festival, men and women in large numbers dressed up like oracles (a intermediate between the humans and goddess of the temple)will come to the temple and become trance and starts dancing and screaming hitting their heads with swords they carry.

They come from different parts of Kerala and neighbouring state of Tamilnadu.

It is a very electrifying event and a must witness festival amongst many in Kerala.

PREREQUISITE
A good pair of shoes.
Camera with preferably a small lens, flash and extra batteries.
Videoconferencing via Google Meet for the theory session.

DETAILED PLANNING
 
Day 0 (date will be shared with the workshop participants) – 3h:
A few days before the workshop (date to be confirmed), will host an introductory session about the festival.
This session will take place online (via Google Meet) and will last 1-2 hours.

Day 1 (30/03/2025)
Before 12 pm : Arrival to Kodungalur, Thrissur.

2 pm : Meet at the hotel and then visit the temple area to shoot the oracles until 8 pm.

Back to hotel and end of Day 1 session.

Day 2 (31/03/2025) – 6.00 am until 8 pm
Meeting at the hotel and then visiting beach to shoot the Oracles taking bath and dressing up to go to temple. On the way can shoot many of them.

9 am : Breakfast and then visiting temple area.

10 am to 1 pm : Shoot in and around the temple.

1 pm : lunch break.

3 pm : Get ready to shoot the main event, Kavu Theendal.

6 pm : take break and then continue shoot at the temple for Mudi aatu until 8 pm.

End of workshop.

Day 3 (01/04/2025)

End of the workshop and all participants can depart to their hometowns.
